Hyundai Pro Longboard Tour Event #5

Surfing New Zealand
Port Waikato  New Zealand
26 - 27 March  2010

Final event of Hyundai Pro Longboard Tour boosted to six star rating - $6,900 in prize money

The final event of the Hyundai Pro Longboard Tour has been boosted to a six-star event with $6,900 in cash prizes up for grabs.  The increased rating is set to attract the best surfers from around the country as well as international talent spurred into travelling to New Zealand by the big prize money on offer.

The Port Waikato leg of the Tour takes place on the 26-27 March and concludes a five-event series that was set to start on the 2nd January before a flat ocean caused the postponement of the Tour opener.

“We originally postponed the Mount Maunganui event, yet due a jam packed summer season of events we have been unable to reschedule and unfortunately have had to cancel the event” commented Surfing New Zealand CEO Greg Townsend.

“We discussed at length the different options on the table.  Along with Hyundai, we tried to make sure the surfers were not majorly disadvantaged by the cancellation of this first event.  Obviously cancelling is not ideal but increasing the rating of the final event was a way we could raise the stakes for the surfers” said Townsend.

The Tour heads to Sandy Bay north of Whangarei in just over a week for what will now be the first event of the tour.  The Sandy Bay event traditionally attracts the biggest field of surfers on the tour and as a result, the event will now take place over three days.  The event was also boosted to a five-star rating at the start of the tour reflecting the reputation the event has.

The complete calendar of events for the 2010 Hyundai Pro Longboard Tour follows:

O'Neill surf team expands to include Bobby Martinez

Team News

Premier Goofy Footer to Sport O’Neill Clothing and Wetsuits

O’Neill Clothing, the original California surf, snow and youth lifestyle brand, has officially signed Bobby Martinez to an endorsement deal with both their apparel and wetsuit divisions in the U.S.  Martinez, who finished the 2009 World Championship Tour (WCT) ranked eighth in the world, is widely regarded as the most sought after “free agent” in professional surfing, and recently competed the entire season without the support of a major clothing sponsor, a feat that is virtually unheard of in this day and age.

The Dream Tour veteran and Santa Barbara, Calif. native has not only been heralded as a premier goofy footer,  but routinely referred to as one of the world’s most well-rounded surfers and a perennial world title threat each year since 2006. That is when he claimed WCT Rookie of the Year honors and stunned the industry with a jaw-dropping victory at Teahupoo, Tahiti, arguably the most challenging wave on the professional circuit.

Additionally, Martinez finished the year-end rankings in the top 10 each season of his WCT career and has multiple wins at both Teahupoo and Mundaka, Spain under his belt, making him the most successful California surfer during that time span.

“O’Neill is thrilled to welcome Bobby to our surf team,” said Garth Tarlow, O’Neill’s Director of Sports Marketing.  “He is one of the few surfers on tour that racks up WCT victories each season and, bottom line, he’s a surfer’s surfer with amazing technique, tremendous power and total commitment.  We look forward to watching his tenacious approach to the tour this year.”

O’Neill Clothing CEO, Toby Bost, added: “In an era of evolving change in the surf industry, O’Neill is committed to building the best team of surfers in the world.  We feel this year we have done just that with the addition of Bobby Martinez."

Martinez joins a prominent group of O’Neill surfers, including Jordy Smith, Timmy Reyes, Cory Lopez and Roy Powers. “I’m more than happy to be part of the O’Neill team,” Martinez said.  “It’s a company of surfers for surfers, and even though it has been a long wait, it’s totally worth it.”

Rip Curl Pro Search will relocate 'Somewhere in the Caribbean'     > en francais ci-dessous

Rip Curl International has today revealed that the Rip Curl Pro Search - the ASP World Tour's only globally-mobile surfing tournament - will call 'somewhere in the Caribbean' home this year, from October 30 to November 10.

The announcement comes on the eve of this season's first ASP World Tour event (Gold Coast, February 27) and is exciting news for the world's best male and female surfers as they finalize preparations for the busy year ahead. Although the official location won't be unveiled until the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach event in April, today's leak is sure to silence some of the potential destination rumors.

"We're excited to get that news off our chest," says Scott Hargreaves, Rip Curl International Event Manager. "There have been rumors galore and lots of gossip, but we've done a pretty good job of keeping things secret yet again."

"This year's event is going to be a new experience for everyone and will definitely take a few people by surprise. The Caribbean is home to some beautiful countries and many A-grade waves, so it's sure to be an exotic and eventful adventure."

The Rip Curl Pro Search has enjoyed a colorful and very successful few years since it's launch in 2005. The event has moved from Reunion Island to Mexico, Chile, Bali and Portugal respectively, scoring amazing surf at each spot.

"The Rip Curl Pro Search is always the event I most look forward to and I know it's also a favorite for the rest of the guys and girls tour," says Mick Fanning, reigning ASP World Champion and two-time defending Rip Curl Pro Search champion.

"It's exciting checking out somewhere new each year and seeing how the world's best surfers adapt to the new waves. Throwing a random stop in the schedule evens the field too, because generally speaking nobody on tour has spent much time at the spots Rip Curl chooses to run these Search events."

FCS Manufacturers Cup

NSW South Jim Beam Surftag round
Wanda Beach, New South Wales
30 - 31 January 2010

Zahn Foxton, Richie Lovett, Matt Bemrose, Dan Karen take team to top

Aloha surfboards has taken out the FCS Manufacturers Cup on the first day of the NSW South round of the Jim Beam Surftag in challenging one metre waves at Wanda beach today.

Led by a rampant Matt Bemrose who racked up the entire day’s highest individual score of 28.4, the Aloha team of Zahn Foxton (24.3), Bemrose, Dan Karen (16.9) and former world top ten surfer and recovering cancer sufferer Richie Lovett (11.0) combined to total 80.6 points to defeat  Stacey Surfboards (72.9),  Chilli (72.5) and Warner (69.6).

The top three teams from the NSW South event progressed to the national Manufacturers Cup final. The Manufacturers Cup, a competition for surfboard manufacturers, is run to a similar format to the Surftag series. Four man teams, made up of two factory employees and two team riders, have 45 minutes to each catch three waves in relay style.

Bemrose, a former Australian open champion, was undoubtedly the star of the final but after the final he heaped praise on his team mates. “It’s good to get a win, especially having a boss of sorts like Rich Lovett in the team,” Bemrose said. “Especially considering what Rich has done in surfing and coming back from illness.

“Aloha is a great company and surfing with the other guys that represent it, guys the calibre of Zahn, Dan and Rich is awesome.”
