Peru will host the 2010 Billabong ISA World Surfing Games >
he perfect waves of Señoritas and Caballeros will see over 200 surfers as members of their National Surfing Teams compete for medals in one of the world’s greatest surfing events It’s official, the 2010 Billabong ISA World Surfing Games will be held in the perfect waves of Señoritas and Caballeros, Punta Hermosa, Peru, from October 21 until the 29, 2010.
After reviewing the list of applying nations, the ISA considered Peru to be the perfect location for the 2010 edition of the event. ISA President, Fernando Aguerre stated: “Peru, the birthplace of Latin American surfing has some of the best waves in the world. After the successful ISA World Masters Surfing Championship in 2008, the ISA is looking forward to a great Billabong ISA World Surfing Games in 2010.”
Señoritas and Caballeros is a perfect setting for an ISA event as there are both perfect and consistent left and right pointbreaks that work at the same time and are close to each other. The breaks are located in the famous surfing town of Punta Hermosa, which also has the necessary infrastructure to hold an event of this magnitude.
The Peruvian Surfing Federation is accustomed to organizing world-class surfing events including a historic ISA World Masters Surfing Championship in 2008 that had perfect six-foot waves every single day. In addition, they organized a successful edition of the Pan American Surfing Games in 2006 and have hosted a stop for the ASP Women’s World Tour since 2007.
Karín Sierralta, Executive Director of the Peruvian Surfing Federation and ISA Vice President, showed his excitement after being notified that Peru won the bid by saying: “We are proud to be selected to host an ISA Open World Championship in Peru after 45 years. In 1965, Peru held the World Surfing Championship and the local Peruvian star, Felipe Pomar won the event, becoming an ISA World Champion. We’re looking forward to getting another title at home.”
For the second year in a row, leading surf wear brand Billabong will be the title sponsor of this enormous Olympic Style event. Paul Naude, Billabong USA President, commented: "Billabong's involvement in our inaugural ISA World Surfing Games in Costa Rica was an eye-opener. The talent, passion, camaraderie and team spirit was fantastic and refreshing in the modern era of competitive surfing. We are very excited about what the event in Peru will deliver."
The Billabong ISA World Surfing Games will see over 30 countries and over 200 surfers competing in the Open Men, Open Women and Longboard divisions. The date and venue are set; now teams must start getting ready for one of the biggest events of our sport.

Grade 4 ASP Australia Men's Pro Junior South Stradbroke Island Queensland 1 - 5 February 2010
Perfect Scores And Pumping Waves On Day-Four
Gold Coast Queensland -- The inaugural Couran Cove Island Resort Pro Junior today well and truly entered the business end of competition, with top seeded surfers posting perfect scores in barrelling beach breaks on Queensland’s South Stradbroke Island.
Perth Standlick (Bondi, NSW) was the day’s standout competitor with the stylish Sydneysider posting one of the day’s highest heat scores registering a combined two wave total of 14.35 points (out of a possible 20), including a near-perfect 9.85 gurgling barrel ride.
However, Standlick wasn’t the only competitor posting huge scores on the penultimate day of competition with Portuguese surfer Frederico Morais claiming a perfect 10-point ride and New South Wales star Davey Cathels (Narrabeen) not far behind with a 9.65 wave in their third round heats respectively.
Contest Director Scott Gillies said it was refreshing to see the world’s best junior surfers in some testing conditions. “The conditions out there today were big, barrelling waves and I think the juniors were enjoying the challenge,” said Gillies. “Competitors in this event aren’t far off the elite World Tour level, so to see them tested in some solid waves is good to see,” he said.
Competition is expected to conclude round-four today, leaving the quarter finals, semi-finals and final for the last day of the event’s waiting period tomorrow. Conditions are expected to remain consistent for tomorrow’s conclusion with forecasts event suggesting a possible increase in swell.
Being run similar to an elite ASP World Tour competition, the Couran Cove Island Resort Pro Junior is based around a unique ‘island format,’ with the competition designed to give competitors optimal surfing conditions throughout the event’s duration.
The Couran Cove Island Resort Pro Junior is proudly supported by Couran Cove Island Resort, ASP Australasia, Red Bull, Australia’s Surfing Life Magazine, Sea FM and Surfing Queensland.
The Couran Cove Island Resort Pro Junior will commence on February 1 and conclude on February 5, 2010.
Association Professional Surfing Puerto Rico Domes Beach, Rincon Puerto Rico 27 - 28 February 2010
Corona Extra Pro Surf Circuit resumes in Puerto Rico
On Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 27 and 28, the Corona Extra Pro Surf Circuit will hold a $15,000 Men’s and Women’s tournament at Domes Beach, in the town of Rincon, on the northwest corner of the island. This will mark the 17th edition of the popular circuit, which runs under the auspices of the A.P.S.P.R. (Association of Professional Surfing of Puerto Rico).
APSPR was founded in 2001 by local surfer and surfboard shaper Werner Vega and his wife, Vivianee, to provide international quality surfing competition to the Caribbean.
All APSPR events have the same goal and commitment: To determine the best surfers at each event; To provide them with the highest standard of competition possible; To improve the knowledge and performance of all competitors; To provide the competitors and the sponsors with substantial exposure and recognition; To enhance the professionalism of surfing.
The Corona Extra events have become the premier showcase for the veteran surfing talents on the island, like Juan Ashton and Carlos Cabrero, as well as a springboard for a young generation of hot competitors like Brian Toth and Dylan Graves, who are now making their mark in the international rankings. All four of them are expected to compete at Domes. On the Women’s side of the competition, Corona and APSPR have launched the careers of the top Puerto Rican surfers like Idalis “Lilac” Alvarado and Liselie Gonzales.
APSPR Director Werner Vega is hoping that February at Domes will continue with the amazing run of surf that Puerto Rico has already enjoyed this winter. The freezing temperatures in the U.S. that reached all the way down to Florida are the weather engine that generates the strong Atlantic swells which make Puerto Rico the surfing mecca of the Caribbean. “This has been the best winter of surf that I can remember in years”, said Vega. “We have had not only huge swells, but clean conditions at all the northwest spots. Many famous traveling pros have been on the island for months.”
The close proximity of Puerto Rico by air has made it the favorite winter destination for East Coast surfers from the U.S., especially the Northeast. New Jersey pros Matt Keenan and Jason Reagan are regular visitors, and competitors in the Corona events, and are again expected at Domes. Floridian women like Connie Arias, Kirra Shepard and two-time Corona winner, Karina Petroni are also expected to be back again.
University of Florida develops 'RichterScale' for shark attacks
Contrary to the typical media response, all shark attacks are not equal, and University of Florida researchers have created a scale that ranks shark-related injuries. Media coverage of shark attacks often leans toward the sensational, no matter how serious the victim's injuries are.
In July 2005, for example, a shark bit a 19-year-old Austrian man off Boca Grande; the following April, a shark bit an 11-year-old Michigan boy off Marco Island.
The incidents received the same coverage - front-page stories in local newspapers - even though the Austrian man suffered severe lacerations that required surgery to repair tendons and vessels on his foot and ankle, while the Michigan boy was merely nipped on the hand.
"No doubt, every shark attack will be a story," said George Burgess, director of the International Shark Attack File in Gainesville. "A shark attack is a grabber: It grabs people's attention. But every shark attack elicits the same reaction whether it's a nick or a very serious injury."
Carlsbad -- TransWorld Media and The Sacred Craft Consumer Surf Expo are pleased to announce TransWorld SURF and TransWorld Business as the media sponsors for the 2010 Sacred Craft Expos. This move helps Sacred Craft draw a younger demographic and offers the event comprehensive, multi-channel media coverage.

Sacred Craft is a well-established consumer show that takes you from the beach to the show floor to check out the perfect board. It’s our goal as a media company to bring a great experience for surfers in and out of the water.”
